High Intensity Training – updated

Michael Mosley HITReading about High Intensity Training (HIT) and Tabata a few weeks ago, I was concerned that as it was originally designed for the Japan Olympic Team it would be unsuitable, even dangerous, for most people, yet many gyms were advertising it for January 2014.

Since then the media has been publicising the author of Fast Exercise, Michael Mosley’s research and participation into HIT and the benefits for us mere mortals. They include increased sensitivity to insulin to process sugar, improved muscular strength and overall fitness. Perhaps the most attractive aspect in this age of time paucity is that it can take as little as 2 minutes intense activity (plus a few minutes warming up and cooling down) three times a week. Everyone can fit that in! Read the whole article and be impressed!

Meals double in size

fat tummyIn the last 20 years meals have doubled in size, claims an article in the Sunday Times. These super-size meals are damaging the nations health as a study by the British Heart Foundation says. Some portions of food are “out of control” and contributing to increasing cases of heart disease. A chicken curry with rice is 53% bigger than it was in 1993 and plain bagels are 24% bigger.

In yoga we are reminded through Ahimsa not to harm living things beginning with ourselves first and foremost.  This requires self-control these days as we remember the long term health and life-style benefits for eating only what we need rather than the whole supermarket portion of 2013.

Frank Lampard takes up yoga in bid to last like Ryan Giggs.

Frank-Lampard-takes up yoga

Impressed that 39 year old Ryan Giggs is still playing at the top of his game, Lampard has started yoga. He has no plans to hang up his boots at the age of 34.

He told the Mirror, “I looked at Giggs when we played United last Sunday.  He was as fit as a fiddle and had an aura around him. He is the benchmark really.  I’m doing a little bit of yoga.  I had to fight myself to do it because I like training outside and it’s a different mindset.  But, certainly when I do it, I feel the benefits.  I’ll try to keep it in my schedule.”

Yoga’s not just for his missus!  Perhaps we’ll see lots more sports men and women taking yoga up for their health and fitness.

On Doing Less

On Doing Less.do-less-small2

Re-posted from http://fitisafeministissue.wordpress.com/2013/01/29/on-doing-less/#comments – an interesting site with a particular perspective that still manages to put forward lots of practical ideas on a broad range of fitness issues in an open and inclusive way.

The time-management ideas are excellent – I shall put them to good use. I have certainly worked on the premise that a little of yoga practised is better than none!! But may I comment that yoga practised on the mat is just that – practice for living our lives anywhere doing a whole miriad of things with all the benefits that yoga brings: strength, flexibility, balance to name but a few!  Now I’ve visited the blog, I’ll be revisiting!

How is the year shaping up?

In the current economic situation, being able to shop freely may not be possible, some of us may have to ebay possessions to raise needed cash. Or it could be much worse than that. In the Eight Limbs, Yoga encourage us not to be too attached to things, to be content with what we have, but also to be kind to ourselves. If life doesn’t always go the way we want it to, we should try to go easy on ourselves and avoid heaping blame and negativity on our head. And that can be hard to do…so spending a few minutes doing a few calming  or even energetic postures can help the process by focusing the mind on the body instead. Give a few downward-facing dogs a go, or a focusing balance…they can work wonders!
